What is a Chiropractor?

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a chiropractor as being, “A licensed health care professional who treats disorders chiefly of the musculoskeletal system especially through the manual adjustment or manipulation of the spinal vertebrae to correct nervous system dysfunction.”

The World Health Organisation defines chiropractic care as, “A health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health. There is an emphasis on manual techniques, including joint adjustment and/or manipulation with a particular focus on subluxations.”

In Layman’s terms, chiropractic care involves – among other medical treatments – the manipulation of the spine, joints and soft-tissue in order to treat or prevent issues that include neck pain, back pain, and other mechanical disorders of the human body

What Causes Mechanical Disorders in the Body?

Dr Mark Aaron, Durban chiropractor, shares seven main causes of dysfunctional musculoskeletal systems and mechanical disorders. These are:

  • Trauma (vehicular accidents, slips & falls, sports injuries)
  • Nutritional Deficiency (an unbalanced, unhealthy diet)
  • Poor posture (Incorrect sleeping habits, slouching while sitting, text-neck)
  • Stress (can cause serious muscular knots and tension)
  • Ageing (body-weight pressure on the cervical spine)
  • Repetitive Motion (repeated incorrect body movements)
  • Bad Ergonomics (poor workstation design, incorrect chair height)
  • Trauma (vehicular accidents, slips & falls, sports injuries)
  • Nutritional Deficiency (an unbalanced, unhealthy diet)
  • Poor posture (Incorrect sleeping habits, slouching while sitting, text-neck)
  • Stress (can cause serious muscular knots and tension)
  • Ageing (body-weight pressure on the cervical spine)
  • Repetitive Motion (repeated incorrect body movements)
  • Bad Ergonomics (poor workstation design, incorrect chair height)

Examples of Chiropractic Care

While chiropractors are mainly concerned with the manipulation of the spine, joints and muscles – many add steps like acupuncture and wrapping to their chiropractic care offering. Dr Mark Aaron utilises manipulation, soft tissue therapy (types of massage), dry needling, kinesiotaping and corrective exercises as part of his chiropractic care in Durban. Common examples of chiropractic care include:

Neck Pain Treatment

Issues with the neck usually stem from neck muscle tension or poor posture. Ever heard of ‘text neck’? This is a forward head posture that is caused by working on a computer, looking down at our phones, and sleeping on a pillow that is too high. Over time, this forward head posture can permanently misalign your spine, leading to pinched nerves and serious neck pain. A chiropractor is able to remedy issues with the neck through a combination of manual neck adjustments and dry needling.

Back Pain Relief

Poor posture over time and sports injuries are two of the leading causes of back pain, something hundreds of thousands of people across the globe deal with on a daily basis. Pressure on the spine leads to misalignment, which in turn can cause health issues that include headaches, back pain, sleep issues and indigestion. Chiropractic care that includes spinal adjustments, dry needling and kinesiotaping has been shown to remedy spinal misalignment and in turn reduce chronic back pain.

Sports Chiropractor

As mentioned above, sports injuries are one of the leading causes of spinal misalignment. Regardless of the sport being played, fast movements executed incorrectly can pinch nerves and damage muscles – and in some cases even do damage to the skeletal system. A sports chiropractor offers chiropractic care that includes routine kinesio taping, manual adjustments and acupuncture to ensure players of sports keep their bodies in good shape and performing at its peak! Dr Mark Aaron often treats sportsmen and women (runners, golfers, rugby & hockey players) who are not in pain but undergo treatments to give them a competitive advantage or to prevent injury.

Family Chiropractic

Are your children’s pillows causing damage to their posture? Could your husband’s snoring be more than just a sign of deep sleep? Children suffer from back pain, headaches and leg pain too – often caused by playing sport and spending too much time on smart phones and tablets. Family chiropractic care involves manual adjustments, dry needling and kinesio taping where needed – with a primary focus on the chiropractor delivering sound health advice on issues including posture, nutrition, fitness and sleep affecting all members of the family – big or small.

Signs You Should See a Chiropractor

Our modern day life does not predispose us to good body mechanics and health. Stress and injury are often important factors in our pain. One of the biggest additional factors is poor posture. Sitting in front of computers, steering wheels, cell phones and TV’s for long hours leads to imbalances such as tight or weak muscles and restricted joints. These factors can lead to typical problems such as:

  1. Sports injuries
  2. Spinal pain
  3. Headaches
  4. Carpal tunnel syndrome
  5. Tennis elbow
  6. Hip arthritis
  7. Heel pain
  8. Dizziness
  9. Nerve pressure – tingling and numbness
  10. And many more

My job is to identify which muscles are tight and which are weak, to correct those imbalances and release the corresponding tight joints. When these imbalances are corrected the pain resulting from them can be resolved. This may be a relatively quick process if the imbalance and dysfunction has not lead to tissue damage. If it has, it may take somewhat longer to treat. In either case we can normally help

Benefits of Regular Chiropractic Care

Wondering if a chiropractic adjustment could be the solution you’ve been looking for? Chiropractic care can relieve pain, fix existing mechanical issues, prevent further musculoskeletal damage, and greatly improve quality of everyday life! Below are a few benefits of regular chiropractic care:

Reduce Neck and Lower Back Pain

Did you know that around 80% of us will experience back or neck pain in our lifetimes? Spinal adjustments and other chiropractic methods are non-invasive solutions that can significantly reduce this type of pain.

Who Can Benefit: Sports injury or accident sufferers, people with poor posture

Prevent the Progression of Scoliosis

This is a condition characterised by an abnormal curvature of the spinal column, occurring most often during pre-pubescent growth spurts. Scoliosis causes chronic pain, reduction in range of motion, breathing issues and abnormal posture. A combination of chiropractic care and physical therapy helps to prevent the progression of scoliosis.

Who Can Benefit: Pre-pubescent children showing early signs of scoliosis.

Reduce Bodily Inflammation

Inflammation causes tension, joint issues and chronic pain. Chiropractic adjustments are able to reduce bodily inflammation which brings lower back pain relief, relief of joint pains, and reduction in muscular tension throughout the body.

Who Can Benefit: Sufferers of arthritis or auto-immune diseases.

Treat Tension Headaches & Migraines

Other than back and neck pain, the treatment of tension headaches is a chiropractor’s bread and butter! Tension headaches and migraines are often caused by muscle tension which comes about due to back misalignment. Got a headache that just won’t go away? Visit a chiropractor near you!

Who Can Benefit: People with high-stress jobs, university students

Reduce Vertigo & Dizziness

Feelings of dizziness and vertigo make performing even the most mundane of everyday tasks extremely difficult. Chiropractic adjustments can target joints and vertebrae that might not be moving correctly, fixing the body’s natural balance and reducing the prevalence of cervical vertigo episodes.

Who Can Benefit: People with poor neck posture, or who’ve experienced neck trauma.

What treatments do I use?

Joints and muscles cannot function independently. If the joint becomes restricted then the muscles associated with that joint will become weak or tight, and vice-versa.  Therefore, we usually have to treat both the joints and the muscles. The treatments I often use are:

  1. Manipulation – restores correct joint motion
  2. Dry needling – releases tight muscle spots and increases blood flow
  3. Soft tissue therapy – release tight muscle spots
  4. Exercises – strengthens the weak muscles and stretches the tight ones
  5. Strapping – supports injured or painful areas
  6. Advice – this is important to prevent the same problem reoccurring.
